What is the wage gap? It does not describe how women are paid a different amount to men when they have the same credentials and experience, which still occurs despite being technically illegal. The gender pay gap is much bigger than that and describes, the bias faced by women when they get passed up for promotions or senior jobs for the sole fact that they are women. More women will graduate from universities than men in the US this year, yet on average women are earning 82 cents to a man’s US dollar.
Women make-up about half the workforce, yet it has been proven when a man walks into a job interview wearing a wedding ring, an interviewer is more likely to perceive the candidate as stable and responsible. In contrast, when a woman wears a wedding ring, flakiness is more likely to be perceived.As a result companies will be less likely to invest in their training because of the increased likelihood of a married woman taking maternity leave or putting their family over the job. In addition, women returning from maternity leave are discriminated against on the fact that there is valuable experience that they do not have.
My key questions are: Can women have it all? Do men have it all? Can women get paid fairly and have a family w breaking the system?And is the wage gap justified?
